About:
Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is commemorated on November 20 each year. It honours the memory of trans people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-trans violence. Trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith began the vigil in 1999 to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a trans woman who was killed in 1998.
In Australia, there are only 3 recorded deaths of trans people since 2008, but this figure is underrepresented. Recent research reveals that there are somewhere between 10 and 15, a low but still unacceptable figure. Globally, since 2008, there are almost 3500 recorded deaths of trans people just for being trans.
This mindless transphobic violence against people who are trying to live normal lives is a human rights disgrace, but we stand by those lost and remember their unique contributions to society, and know that we love them.
